The papers include field note books, genealogies and other research data, relating to the Kimberleys, Queensland, South Australia, New South Wales, Western Australia, Northern Territory and Papua New Guinea. There is material relating to the question of aboriginal-white contact, of national morale during the 1939-1945 war, and to the many societies of which Elkin was a prominent member including the Australian National Research Council, Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science, Australian Social Science Research Council, and Association for the Protection of Native Races. Anthropologist and Anglican priest, Elkin was Head of the Department of Anthropology at Sydney University from 1934-1956, and held a number of professional and academic memberships. His main area of study was the anthropology of Australian Aboriginal people, with a focus also on the people of Papua New Guinea. He was also the editor of Oceania (1933-1979).
